Sarah Jane McGovern – Chair

Sarah is the Chair of The Activity Den as well as volunteering with Durham City Woodcraft Folk. Sarah is a qualified youth and community worker with experience of managing staff, supporting voluntary and community sector organisations in their governance and fundraising.

Sarah has been attending the Stanley Woodcraft Folk (now based at the Den) since it was set up by her Dad in 1988. 

 Ashleigh Phillips – Finance Director

Ashleigh is one of the lastest Board Members to join the team as our new Finance Director. Ashleigh has 11 years of experience in the Finance industry and is is AAT qualified. She is currently studying for a Chartered Accounting qualification. Ashleigh attended The Woodcraft Folk (now based at The Den) and is looking forward to being back and using her expertise to help with our charity!

Stephen Grey – Company and Charity Secretary

Steve is the Company and Charity Secretary and has a Level 3 Certificate in Youth Work as well as a Certificate in Management. Steve writes funding applications and Business Plans for the Den; as well as looking after the building itself, liaising with our Surveyors and Solicitors.

As well as experience of Public Relations; Steve has Shop Steward Experience and is Health and Safety trained.

Steve has co-ordinated of The Woodcraft Folk –for over 15 Years and also has Equality and Diversity Training.

Lauren Gowland – Director

Lauren is the Marketing and PR Lead for The Den. Lauren joined the Woodcraft Folk (now based at The Den) at 8 years old and became a Young Volunteer. After a short break to go to Uni, Lauren is now back as part of the Den family to help write funding applications and look after the website, social media and  marketing.

Phillip Marshall – Director

 Phillip has been involved in Community Projects in the Derwenstide Area since he was a teenager and has been a Public Representative on The Derwent Valley Partnership AAP for 8 years. Phillip joins The Den excited about the fresh challenge ahead and aims to be actively involved in writing funding bids and helping the project recruit further volunteers. Phillip has a Level 3 in Youth Work and has worked with all types of young people from a range of backgrounds. He is a keen 8 Ball Pool and Snooker player as well as being a Sunderland fan!

 Peter Bell – Director

Peter works in the ECommerce section of retail and has joined the Director team to help manage the operational and technical aspects of running our charity. He started attending The Den at 11 years old and continued on to become a Young Volunteer. At the age 18, with the help of The Den, he travelled to Nepal to volunteer abroad for 10 weeks and he now volunteers at most of The Den’s weekly groups.

Den Assistants – James, Lauren and Kate

We have three excellent Den Assistants that help and support our Youth Workers and Volunteers with running our clubs and events! James, Lauren and Kate are a huge asset to The Den’s team and are very important in the smooth running of activities and community events.
