We are running ongoing recruitment for a Youth Worker at The Den! The opportunity is for 8 hours per week at £10 per hour and the successful candidate will be working with our volunteers and Den Assistants to plan, organise and run our Youth Clubs.

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help run our charity. We need volunteers with a wide variety of skills and qualities, for example

  • Young Volunteers – anyone age 14 and over can become a young volunteer at The Den. This role is great to add to a CV or help build college and University applications, and provides the opportunity to take on more responsibilities and develop new skills.
  • Board Members – the charity is managed by a Board of volunteers who cover everything from finance, marketing, legal to recruitment, operations and community events. If you could spare a few hours a month to lend your skills to a great local cause, we’d love to hear from you!
  • Building Management – The Den itself needs a lot of looking after. We are continually trying to improve the building and we have decorated, put in new windows, new heating system and a new roof. If you are practical and handy with some tools, or you are a company that would like to give something back, we’d be very grateful for your help in keeping our building safe, spick and span for our young people to use.

If you are interested in volunteering at The Den email for more info.

NEW Stanley Sound Hub Project

UPDATE  – After consultation with our members, Sound Hub is now on at the NEW TIME of 10am until 12 noon!

Last month we launched our NEW Stanley Sound Hub Project, following our Taster Day back in July.

Taking place every Saturday at 11am, the Sound Hub Project provides a great opportunity for young people to learn drums and guitar, and practice playing as part of a band.

Expert tuition is provided and so are all the instruments – it doesn’t matter if you’re a pro and want to perform or if you’ve never picked up an instrument before, everyone is welcome.

The group is for ages 10 and upwards and costs £2 per person. We’ll be showcasing the talents of all of the Sound Hub’s members in a performance in December.

Awards for our Young Achievers

Just before Christmas, The Activity Den hosted the 4th annual North Durham Youth Achievement Awards for young people throughout Stanley. The evening was to recognise and celebrate the positive work the young people do for their local community.

The Awards evening was supported by Durham County Council’s Stanley Area Action Partnership (AAP) and saw over 60 young people and youth workers attend from groups across the area including Stanley Young Peoples Club, Stanley Youth Project, Oxhill Youth Club, Woodcraft Folk, Steps and The Activity Den. Awards were presented to both groups and individuals for the effort and commitment that young people have shown to a variety of projects.

Den Volunteers and their Awards

Volunteer of the Year Awards were presented to Zac Sunderland from The Activity Den and James Clark from The Woodcraft Folk for their outstanding commitment and dedication to the projects. Even the entertainment was provided by the young people, with Allyssa, Emily and Anya taking to the stage before the disco got well underway!

Farewell to Catherine…

The Activity Den would like to say a massive THANK YOU to our youth worker Catherine Ruddick.

Catherine is moving on from The Den and on behalf of all of the children, parents and volunteers we would like to thank her very much for all of the time and effort she has put in for us and also for the The Children and Young People’s Development Committee.

Catherine joined The Den early 2014 and has looked after Den Shoots, Healthy Futures and Later youth clubs, as well as coaching our young volunteers. A great listener with a big personality and infectious laugh, Catherine will be missed!

We wish her lots of luck in the future!
