We’d like to say a big THANK YOU to some very important companies and organisations that have helped The Den this year. To name a few…
The County Durham Community Foundation with the David and Barbara Watson Grassroots Fund and I’Anson Family Fund, along with Stanley Area Action Partnership have made the Stanley Sound Hub Project possible and will mean that young people in Tanfield and surrounding areas can learn new musical skills and meet like-minded friends.
The South Causey Inn selected The Den as one of their ten local charities for their 10th anniversary year and have organised a number of events to raise money. Their contribution will cover the running costs of The Den, including health and safety compliance, as well as ensuring we can afford to continue to employ a Youth Worker and Den Assistant.
The Ballinger Trust has been instrumental in supporting us and other local youth groups in joining up the provision for young people in the area. They have provided expert guidance in looking towards longer term projects and funding opportunities.
Den Director Phillip Marshall raised funds for The Den and other charities by playing 100 continuous hours of snooker, and broke a Guinness World Record in the process!
Stanley Town Council contributed towards our Infinite Air trip and the Sir James Knott Trust also provided us with a kind contribution. The Hadrian Trust and the Barbour Foundation have also donated funding to support our charity and community events. The Den would not be here without the support and financial backing of these amazing organisations and we would like to say a huge thank you from all of our volunteers and members.
Youth Worker Recruitment
We are running ongoing recruitment for a Youth Worker at The Den! The opportunity is for 8 hours per week at £10 per hour and the successful candidate will be working with our volunteers and Den Assistants to plan, organise and run our Youth Clubs.
For more information and an application pack email firstname.lastname@example.org
We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help run our charity. We need volunteers with a wide variety of skills and qualities, for example
- Young Volunteers – anyone age 14 and over can become a young volunteer at The Den. This role is great to add to a CV or help build college and University applications, and provides the opportunity to take on more responsibilities and develop new skills.
- Board Members – the charity is managed by a Board of volunteers who cover everything from finance, marketing, legal to recruitment, operations and community events. If you could spare a few hours a month to lend your skills to a great local cause, we’d love to hear from you!
- Building Management – The Den itself needs a lot of looking after. We are continually trying to improve the building and we have decorated, put in new windows, new heating system and a new roof. If you are practical and handy with some tools, or you are a company that would like to give something back, we’d be very grateful for your help in keeping our building safe, spick and span for our young people to use.
If you are interested in volunteering at The Den email email@example.com for more info.
UPDATE – After consultation with our members, Sound Hub is now on at the NEW TIME of 10am until 12 noon!
Last month we launched our NEW Stanley Sound Hub Project, following our Taster Day back in July.
Taking place every Saturday at 11am, the Sound Hub Project provides a great opportunity for young people to learn drums and guitar, and practice playing as part of a band.
Expert tuition is provided and so are all the instruments – it doesn’t matter if you’re a pro and want to perform or if you’ve never picked up an instrument before, everyone is welcome.
The group is for ages 10 and upwards and costs £2 per person. We’ll be showcasing the talents of all of the Sound Hub’s members in a performance in December.

The Den is back after the Summer Holidays and our groups and clubs are up and running!
We hope you enjoyed your Summer Holidays! We used the break to recruit some new members to our team including a brand new Youth Worker and Den Assistant, and they’ve been looking forward to meeting all of our members.
All of our kids’ groups and youth clubs are now back at the usual times;
DEN DANCE – Mondays at 5.30
WOODIES – Tuesday at 6.15
DEN SHOOTS – Wednesday at 5.30
HEALTHY FUTURES – Thursday at 6
LATER – Thursday at 7.45
We’ll be keeping you posted with more of our plans for the Autumn – watch this space!
The Activity Den will be taking some of its Woodies members to see North Durham Academy’s production of The Lion King!
We’ll be looking out for all of our favourite characters when we go to the local school on Tuesday 12th July – be prepared for us singing along!!
The show is a end-of-year treat for our young people as the summer holiday approaches and The Den breaks for the Summer.
The Activity Den is a charitable organisation, funded by grants and powered (mostly) by dedicated volunteers.
We are always on the look out for more people that can help out – in return for a rewarding way to spend your time and the opportunity to learn some new skills.
There are loads of ways you could volunteer and the amount of time you can spend is entirely flexible! For example…
Working with children and young people – we could provide experience in planning activities and managing youth groups as well as learning about safeguarding and important legislation
Building Management – we have a huge building that we look after ourselves. The skills of an electrician, joiner, stonemason or general handyman would be a great help on an ad-hoc basis – whenever you have an hour to spare!
Admin / Clerical Support – Our office is always busy with enquiries, planning and paperwork, compliance documents, monitoring forms and accounts. If you can offer any skills in these areas it would be a huge help to the running of The Den.
Tea Making – This is essential – our youth workers are eternally grateful for a cup of tea and an extra pair of hands during sessions. Even if you only have 20 minutes, assistance with tidying up or collecting subs is always very welcome!
If you want to find out more about opportunities to volunteer with The Den, please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org or on 01207 236739
