Our Camping Adventure!

The beginning of our adventure

We kicked off Summer 2023 with an amazing camping trip to Dilston Scout Camp in Hexham! Our Woodcraft folk group and The Activity Den group came together with our Young Volunteer Task Force to plan a truly memorable experience. Together with our leaders, trustees, staff and members, everyone had a fun filled week team building, exploring nature and surrounding areas as well as developing various skills!

Our young volunteers were given a fantastic opportunity to shadow group leaders and help out with setting up camp, whilst getting hands on experience. From packing the van full of resources and equipment, to setting up tents and fires, from helping out in the kitchen to leading activities. Our young volunteers turned their hand to every opportunity and with this learnt so many skills and techniques.

Keeping busy, Having Fun

Whilst at camp, our young people took part in a wide range of activities. Some of them experienced campers, enjoying taking part in activities they have done before and others trying something completely new to them! We were able to have fun in the stream, have a go at canoeing and paddle boarding, and Steve our trustee even fell off the strapline with a huge SPLASH! Our younger members tried archery for the first time and our young volunteers even enjoyed a game or two of volleyball. There truly was an activity to suit everyone!

All ye who dwell within the camp, Plates up!

Whilst away at camp we all enjoyed delicious meals which were prepared and cooked by everyone here at camp! We enjoyed Garlic and herb chicken wraps, full English breakfasts and even enjoyed sausages locally sourced from a butcher in Hexham! Our young volunteers even helped out in the kitchen preparing toasties for lunch! Every meal was announced using a traditional Woodcraft folk calling, which was followed by everyone joining together to enjoy each hearty meal.

Visiting a Local Town

We all enjoyed a wonderful visit into the local town of Hexham. Our young people learnt some amazing facts about the history of Hexham and what life was like for prisoners in 1300s at The Old Gaol, as well as visiting the interactive exhibition at The Abbey.

Evenings at Camp

Our evenings at camp were mainly spent around the campfire, which our Young Volunteers were given a lessons on how to light and maintain whilst remaining safe. We enjoyed a movie in the woods around our campfire whilst having a warm hot chocolate. On rainy evenings, we took shelter in the hut, were we all spent hours playing games and having a laugh together as one big camping family, before retiring back to our tents to rest, ready for our next fun-filled day!
